A mortgage or charge is the security a company gives for a loan and most charges have to be registered at Companies House. Often it is the lender who registers the charge at Companies House rather than the company.

The application to register the charge must be made within 21 days of the creation of the charge to ensure its security in the event of liquidation. A court order is required if it needs to be registered outside this 21 day limited.

 To register a charge the particulars must be recorded on the relevant form, the correct form depends on the type of charge, and the instrument (if any) creating or evidencing the charge.
